WELLNESS- A Prescription

Wellness is the state of homeostasis where there is an integration and balance of physical, emotional, and spiritual health. In 1961 Dr. Dunn defined wellness as a multidimensional philosophy. Wellness is a conscious decision to follow a healthy lifestyle free from laziness and self-pity, doing things that are immensely satisfying for you.

A prescription for wellness may include the following:
1. Surround yourself with cheerful, optimistic people and benefit from their company.
2. Take life in a positive manner. Squeeze out negative thoughts. Every morning tell yourself that “Today I am going to be happy.” Know that nothing can hurt you without your consent. Learn to laugh and have fun with responsible friends.
3. Take charge, be honest, stop whining, cut out the blame game and accept responsibility for the quality of your life. Be accountable and use your gut feeling.
4. Read good books, keep up with current affairs, and talk to intelligent thinkers.
5. Take care of the environment, grow vegetables and flowers.
6. Enjoy whatever you do. Know that your attitude and actions work for you better than doctors.
7. Make time for meditations everyday. Even if you do not believe in God or Guru, you can practice “Vipasana” which involves the perfect state of being aware of your breathing without controlling it. Vipasana can be done at any time of the day and it improves your mental capacity.
8. Take up Yoga which is the ultimate exercise which trains the mind to concentrate, and massage the internal organs. Yoga along with “Pranayama”-controlled breathing is an excellent recipe for wellness.
9. Be free of alcohol, drugs and doctors.
10. Know that “healthy” is a lot more than “not being sick”, it is a life long pursuit.
